When to see a psychiatrist for anxiety
Some worry is a normal part of life. It becomes a medical problem when it lasts for weeks, feels hard to control, and starts shaping your choices. About 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. has an anxiety disorder in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. It may be time to see a psychiatrist if you notice:
- Worry that is hard to control and shows up most days
- Panic attacks with a racing heart, shortness of breath, or dizziness
- Trouble falling or staying asleep because your mind will not slow down
- Avoiding work tasks, driving, social events, or crowded places
- Muscle tension, headaches, or stomach problems with no clear medical cause
- Anxiety medication from your primary care doctor that has not helped enough
Care from a board-certified MD at every visit
At our office you see Dr. Bowarshi himself, from your first evaluation to every follow-up. He trained in both internal medicine and psychiatry, with more than ten years of clinical experience focused on depression and anxiety. His internal medicine training helps when anxiety comes with physical symptoms like a racing heart, stomach problems, or poor sleep.
See a psychiatrist, not a rotating provider. Book your first visit with Dr. Bowarshi.
Anxiety conditions Dr. Bowarshi treats
- Generalized anxiety: constant worry about work, health, money, or family that is hard to switch off. Treatment lowers that baseline so everyday decisions feel manageable again.
- Panic attacks and panic disorder: sudden waves of fear with a pounding heart, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Treatment reduces how often attacks happen and the fear of the next one.
- Social anxiety: intense worry about being judged that makes meetings, phone calls, or social events hard to face. A clear plan helps you return to the situations you have been avoiding.
- Anxiety with depression: anxiety and low mood often show up together, and each can make the other harder to treat.
Psychiatrist-led anxiety treatment
- 1. A full psychiatric evaluation: Dr. Bowarshi reviews your symptoms, sleep, health history, current medications, and what you have already tried. Some medical conditions, such as thyroid problems, can look like anxiety, so he considers those too.
- 2. A clear diagnosis and plan: you get a plain-language explanation of what is going on and the options available. You decide together which path to start with.
- 3. Medication management: when medication is the right fit, Dr. Bowarshi prescribes it, tracks benefits and side effects, and adjusts the plan at each follow-up.
- 4. Therapy coordination: many people do best when medication is combined with talk therapy. If you already have a therapist, Dr. Bowarshi coordinates with them. If you do not, our team can help you find one.
When anxiety treatment has not worked
Many adults with anxiety improve with the right medication and therapy. When anxiety comes with depression and several medications have not helped, Dr. Bowarshi can discuss two advanced options offered in the same practice.
TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate brain areas linked to mood. It is FDA-cleared for depression, and some TMS systems are also cleared to reduce anxiety symptoms that occur with depression.
Spravato® is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression, given under supervision in our REMS-certified office.
